Many of our mums have questions about using cloth nappies
Some of our parents have put together some useful information to help you get started. The full guide to using cloth nappies that they have written can be downloaded here:
We’d generally suggest trying out a few different types, as you will get along with some better than others, and different types of nappies may fit your baby better at different growth stages too. Some of the nappy websites sell starter packs of different types of nappies. You can also get second-hand nappies on Facebook or Ebay.
There are many benefits to using cloth nappies:
Reliability - Cloth can be really good at containing leaks, particularly for children that are heavy wetters at night.
Cost - For the first 2 1/2 years of a childs life disposables are estimated to cost £820 (6 nappies a day x 365 days x 15p per nappy x 2.5 years). A mid-range cloth nappy system would cost £332.50 ( £250 + (£33 x 2.5 years)). Plus you can use them again for subsequent children or sell them on.
Environment - Disposables go to landfill and contain plastic plus to costs of manufacture and transport. Cloth is not carbon neutral but has a much smaller impact on the environment.
Style - Cloth comes in a range of stylish options.
Toilet training - many mums find their children toilet train better in cloth nappies.
If you are interested in using cloth nappies there are several nappy advisors and libraries in Leicestershire. Their details are available on the city council web pages.
